Q. For whom do fire investigators work?

A. Fire investigators are most often hired by insurance companies, law firms, and self-insured businesses. In rare instances, they are hired by private individuals.

Q. Does KGFI investigate all types of fires?

A.Yes. Investigations include, but are not limited to:

  • Structural, both homes and businesses
  • Agricultural equipment
  • Boats
  • Recreational vehicles
  • Farmland
  • Wildland

Q. What is the basis of fire investigation?

A. It is both an art and a science. It is an art, in that investigators must be adept at examining, observing and interpreting complex burn patterns. It is a science in that specific scientific principles are applicable to fire. An investigator must understand and stay current in regard to those principles.

Q. What is “CFI” Certification?

A. “CFI” stands for Certified Fire Investigator. The International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) issues such certification. This certification requires a number of years of experience, including courtroom testimony, followed by extensive testing. Continuing education is required on a yearly basis to retain certification.

Q. What is “CFEI” Certification?

A.“CFEI” stands for Certified Fire & Explosion Investigator. The National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI) issues such certification. This certification requires a number of years of experience, including courtroom testimony, followed by extensive testing. Continuing education is required on a yearly basis to retain certification.
